Legio Arcanum Rituals

Ritual (• to •••••)
Prerequisite: Status (Legio Arcanum) •
p. You’ve gained the training and knowledge required to attempt the Legio Arcanum’s mystic rituals, passed down since their origins as the Imperial Sorcerous Legion. The number of dots determines the strength, selection, and number of rituals available.

These all require a (Stamina + Ritual) roll to attempt. You can prepare a number of rituals per chapter whose total dots are less than or equal to your Ritual score – so someone with Ritual •• could prepare two • Rituals or one •• Ritual.

A character can only take up to Ritual ••• normally without getting in deep with the Legio. However, you may take an Extra Rituals merit up to ••••• which adds to Ritual for the purpose of determining how many can be prepared per chapter.

Rituals

Vigilate (•)

The ritual involves smearing a caustic mixture around the outsides of your eye sockets. If successful, you absorb the mixture and your eyes tingle.

  • Dramatic failure: As failure, and treat as a Toxicity 3 bashing poison.
  • Failure: -1 penalty to rolls involving Wits or Composure for the rest of the scene, as your face feels like it’s on fire.
  • Success: You gain Ritual as a bonus on any Wits + Composure/Skill rolls this scene.
  • Exceptional Success: As per Success, but you can also sense magic in people to some degree – when in close contact with someone, you can try a Wits + Occult test.

Moribundus (•)

The ritual involves taking a small dose of a particular poison – about a thimble’s worth. This can be hidden in the mouth beforehand – roll Composure to make sure you don’t accidentally activate it in stressful situations if so.

  • Dramatic failure: As failure, and treat as a Toxicity 3 bashing poison.
  • Failure: -1 penalty to all rolls – it affects you adversely but you’re not fooling anyone. You can end this by spending 1 Willpower as an instant action.
  • Success: You appear to be very close to death for the rest of the scene. While the ruse is on, you have -1 to all rolls due to tremors all over your body. You can spend 1 willpower to end the ruse.
  • Exceptional Success: As per success, but you don’t take the -1 penalty.

Iustitia (••)

The ritual is an extended Stamina+Ritual action requiring (10 – integrity) successes, with one roll involving an hour of meditating amongst highly toxic incense. For each roll:

  • Dramatic failure: The ritual fails. Resolve as if you dramatically failed a breaking point as well.
  • Failure: You don’t make progress towards resolving your mental tension.
  • Success: You make progress.
  • Exceptional Success: You gain +1 to the subsequent breaking point roll.

With regards to the ritual as a whole:

  • Failure: Treat as a Toxicity 3 bashing poison.
  • Success: You may re-roll a failed breaking point that happened within the past day. If you succeed, regain any lost integrity from it.

Reverentia (••)

The ritual involves smearing an overbearing perfume in the appropriate places. If successful, it doesn’t smell terrible.

  • Dramatic failure: As failure, and treat as a Toxicity 4 bashing poison.
  • Failure: The character takes -4 to any social rolls for the rest of the scene.
  • Success: Any attempts to intimidate or frighten the ritualist, with magic or without, take her Ritual dots as a penalty.
  • Exceptional Success: Any attempts to intimidate or frighten the ritualist automatically fail.

Reliqua (•••)

The ritual involves smearing a noxious salve all over any open wounds. The salve involves things that seem like they should cause infection, but do the opposite if done correctly. It can be used on someone who isn’t the ritualist with a -3 penalty.

  • Dramatic failure: Treat as a Toxicity 2 lethal poison. If the character had full lethal damage and had been stabilized, they’re no longer stabilized and are bleeding out.
  • Failure: The character is feverish and disoriented. Take -2 to all dice pools for the rest of the scene.
  • Success: You heal two points of bashing damage or one point of lethal damage for each success.
  • Exceptional Success: Any wounds that don’t get healed by the Success heal naturally in half the time as normal.

Ignis (•••)

The ritual is almost indistinguishable from downing a bottle of cheap liquor, except the blend is very specific and extremely strong if done wrong. It tastes strongly of cinnamon, though.

  • Dramatic failure: Treat as a Toxicity 4 bashing poison.
  • Failure: The character is Drugged for the rest of the scene.
  • Success: You ignore all wound penalties for the rest of the scene, and don’t have to roll Stamina to stay awake if your last Health box is filled.
  • Exceptional Success: In addition to the above, halve any bashing damage you take for the rest of the scene (round up).

Cogitatio (•••)

The ritual involves injecting a swirling brew into the user’s neck. The user’s eyes tend to flick back into their head briefly upon use, but are otherwise normal (on a success anyhow). Use of this is an extended Stamina+Ritual action requiring 5 successes, each roll representing one minute. For each roll:

  • Dramatic failure: The ritual fails. The character also suffers a Toxicty 3 lethal poison.
  • Failure: You don’t make progress towards completing the ritual.
  • Success: You make progress.

With regards to the ritual as a whole:

  • Failure: The character is Drugged for the rest of the scene.
  • Success: For the rest of the scene, as a reflexive action you can either have a two-way conversation with someone telepathically (each of you rolls presence+resolve every turn to successfully send a message) or read someone’s surface thoughts (presence+composure contested by resolve+composure). This doesn’t have any particular tells, but a dramatic failure on reading surface thoughts informs the target what’s happening.
  • Exceptional Success: You can also try to dig deep into someone’s mind (extended presence+composure contested by resolve+composure, 5 for surface thoughts, 10-20 for deep stuff, each roll represents one turn/3 seconds). This one does look a little obvious as you stare at the person like you’re falling asleep standing up.
